What is a 'BDP'?

"Our membership has a common denominator of complex sales, relationship management, and business development in large customer environments."

Greg Wilk, Chairman, SBDP Board of Trustees

The SBDP defines the "BDP" as an individual involved in large-target business development, sales, major accounts, channel business development, strategic relationship management, partnerships, alliance account management, and strategic account management.

We span multiple industries, functions, products and services, all typically with long customer acquisition cycles, usually pursuit teams of four or more professionals selling to large corporate and government customers with multiple decision makers. Most of a BDP's activity is based on collaborative selling models, working with teams on both sides of the table.

Example roles:

Enterprise Sales Executive
Business Development Professional
Business Development Manager
Major Accounts Executive
Strategic Account Manager
Business Development Executive
Business Development Manager
Account Executive
Account Manager
Partnership Manager
Channel Sales Professionals
Alliance Manager
VP or Director, Alliances/Partnerships
VP or Director, Sales
VP or Director, Accounts
Relationship Manager
Key Account Manager
Global Account Manager

This may also include senior professionals in a consulting or delivery role (such as a senior manager or partner at a consulting firm) who have a 50% or more responsibility for direct revenue growth from large organizations. (subject to review)

ALL of the above assumes responsibility for driving revenue with commercial and government clients in large, complex sales and relationship management environments.

What roles are NOT included in the above definition? Any role the primary goal of which is not growing revenue from large accounts. Transactional, personal/consumer, or commodity-type sales with a minimal number of buying decision-makers are probably not a fit for the SBDP. There are excellent associations in the marketplace for such professionals where issues of importance to this segment are more focused.
